  • Open-air museum Germanic farmstead Elsarn

Experience and get to know the everyday life of the Germanic tribes, their buildings and customs.

The open-air museum in Elsarn shows the reconstruction of a Germanic farmstead from the second and third centuries based on archaeological findings from excavations in Bernhardsthal and Hanfthal.

The open-air museum provides an insight into the everyday life of the farming population of the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD in the area north of the middle Danube. The focus is on the architecture of the buildings, domestic crafts and the economic and ecological foundations of the people of the past. The reconstruction of the Germanic farmstead is based on archaeological findings from the Roman imperial period in the northern Middle Danube region. Building materials and tool types for which there is archaeological evidence from prehistoric sites were used in the construction of the buildings.

The complex consists of a large residential stable building, a storage building, craftsmen's houses, a smokehouse, a Germanic show garden and a nature trail with the most important trees, plants and wild plants used at the time.
