Piaristenkirche Krems

The Piarist Church in Krems an der Donau, also known as Kremser Frauenbergkirche, is the oldest church in the town. The Roman Catholic church was possibly dedicated to St. Stephen, the patron saint of the diocese of Passau.

The late Gothic hall church is stylistically associated with the Vienna cathedral building workshop and is therefore also known as the "little sister" of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. Inside, the steeply rising Gothic church impresses with its richly profiled pillars, services, capitals and many other highlights of Gothic architecture. The baroque high altar was built according to plans by Joseph Maria Götz. The altarpiece was painted by Martin Johann Schmidt, it is inscribed 1756 and depicts the Assumption of Mary.

The watchtower attached to the east has been owned by the town since 1616; it was the seat of the town tower and was inhabited until a few decades ago. Opposite the church portal, the covered Piaristenstiege, which was renovated in 2004, leads to Pfarrplatz.
