The market town of Maria Laach am Jauerling in the district of Krems-Land lies in the middle of the Jauerling-Wachau Nature Park and is said to have a pilgrimage tradition dating back around a thousand years. Today, pilgrims, families and sports enthusiasts alike make a pilgrimage to the idyllic recreational village. Beautiful sights and relaxing hiking trails invite you to take a short break - far away from the hustle and bustle of the city, traffic noise and stress.

Maria Laach: unwind in the nature park

The hiking trails in the Jauerling-Wachau Nature Park lead through vineyards and orchards, across flowering meadows or centuries-old stone terraces and through shady forests. In good weather, the magnificent views extend as far as the Carpathian Mountains. The heart of the "hikeable" landscape is the Jauerling summit. At 960 meters above sea level, the Jauerling lookout tower rises another 38 meters into the air. The herb garden, nostalgia museum and tower buffet make the lookout point an ideal excursion destination for the whole family.

The most beautiful hikes on the Jauerling

Wonderful hiking routes lead through the entire municipal area. The Maria Laach power trail on the Jauerling is very popular: it starts at the old drinking fountain on the market square and leads back to the pilgrimage church via 11 forest stations. The circular tour from Maria Laach to the Nature Park House with Wachau Terrace is particularly scenic. The moderate and well-signposted route leads across the high plateau of the Jauerling and promises wonderful views.

Maria Laach pilgrimage site: history & church

The Maria Laach pilgrimage church is located on the southern slope of the Jauerling. Its medieval interior has been largely preserved to this day. A local chapel was mentioned in documents as early as 1263. A Marian chapel in Maria Laach was first mentioned in 1362. As early as the late 17th century, people in despair due to a plague epidemic made pilgrimages to Maria Laach. In 1719, a blind child was miraculously healed. The church has been a pilgrimage church since the beginning of the 18th century.
