The Lower Austrian municipality of Fischamend in the district of Bruck an der Leitha is located at the confluence of the Fischa and Danube rivers - just a few kilometers from Vienna and Vienna-Schwechat Airport. Great sights invite you to take a trip or a short vacation not far from the big city. As a particularly family-friendly "children's town", Fischamend boasts three modern playgrounds. There are also beautiful historical buildings to visit, such as several churches and the water tower built in 1916.
Fischamend: a small town with a big history
Numerous historical facts make Fischamend particularly exciting: a Roman fort is thought to lie beneath the center of Fischamend, but this has not yet been proven archaeologically. In the 19th century, mills and the grain trade were the most valuable economic sectors, and in the 20th century the area was considered the cradle of aviation - with an airship hangar, airfield and the Fischamend aviation arsenal, where engines and airplanes were produced. Fischamend became a town in 1987.
Tip: Fischamend town walk - A town writes eventful history. Under the motto "Small places - big stories", the 3.8 km long walk leads through the Kleine Au and through the town. The free app with audio stories, photos and illustrations brings the tour to life.
Leisure & culture in Fischamend
Fischamend's museums are worth a visit for children and adults alike: the local history museum is located directly in the town's outstanding landmark - the over 30-metre-high fish tower from the Middle Ages - and displays exhibits from prehistoric times to the present day on six floors. The Museum of Aviation and Contemporary History is dedicated to the town's aviation history from 1909 to 1945. Other museums focus on the fire department and photography. For sports enthusiasts: The city museums can also be discovered as part of the Roman remains of Carnuntum cycle tour. The easy cycle route can be cycled in both directions and is well signposted.
Extra tip for culture enthusiasts: the well-known Stand Up Club Fischamend was founded in 1975 - making it the oldest youth club in Austria. To this day, concerts, band competitions and cabaret evenings are held under its roof.
