Austria's largest apricot-growing community, the municipality of Rossatz-Arnsdorf, lies on the southern bank of the Danube in the heart of the Wachau. It is not only wine that characterizes this landscape. After centuries of cultivation, the Wachau apricot is a popular crop. The apricot farmers try to bring the topic closer to hikers with the apricot mile, which is divided into a western (St. Johann-Bacharnsdorf) and an eastern part (Rührsdorf-Rossatzbach).
The tour starts at the Treppelweg in Oberarnsdorf and takes us east along the Danube. After passing the roll-on ferry landing, we continue on to Mitterarnsdorf. Once there, we can stop for a bite to eat at one of the open wine taverns, and then it’s time to head back. The path now runs parallel to the Treppelweg through the apricot orchards all the way back to Oberarnsdorf.
In Mitterarnsdorf, near the church, or in Hofarnsdorf, near the fire station.
Take the A1 Westautobahn to Melk, take the Wachau exit, stay on the right bank of the Danube, and continue toward Mautern.
Take the S 33 from St. Pölten via Mautern and the B 33 or S 5 to Krems—right bank of the Danube at Mautern—B 33
Wachau Bus Line 720, Mitterarnsdorf Bundesstraße stop; walk 50 m along the Bundesstraße toward the east, turn left directly into Mitterarnsdorf toward the Danube; after 250 m, you’ll reach the Treppelweg.
OR: Get off at the Hofarnsdorf Bundesstraße stop (near Gasthof Zur Wachau), cross to the opposite side of the road toward the Danube and head into the town of Hofarnsdorf; after 250 m, you’ll reach the Treppelweg.
