This "best-of" route offers pleasure cyclists an alternative to the classic Danube cycle path, leading over 47 kilometers to the cultural and culinary highlights of the Wagram region. First, the shady Danube floodplain at Grafenwörth, then the spectacular views along the panoramic route at the Wagram ridge. Sun-drenched wine terraces, hidden hollow paths, idyllic cellar lanes, and striking loess formations – here, the typical landscapes of the Wagram show themselves in their finest form. Culinary highlights are provided by starred restaurants in Oberstockstall, Feuersbrunn, and Tulln.
Guests from Tulln can also travel the continuously signposted Danube loop in both directions starting from Tulln and make the return journey via the Danube cycle path, combined with one of the other discovery routes through the Wagram, by train or taxi. The possibilities are thus very diverse.
The Danube loop is an alternative to the Danube cycle path through the Wagram region to Tulln and is a best-of tour through the Wagram. At Grafenwörth, the Danube cycle path is left and the beautiful floodplain is followed to Grafenwörth. Cycling in the flat Danube plain is easy between meadows and fields towards Grafenegg. Grafenegg Castle is nationally known and one of the most important castle buildings in the style of romantic historicism in Austria. Following an avenue, we cycle over Wagram am Wagram and Feuersbrunn, one of the culinary hotspots of the region, continuing to Fels. Here, sporty cyclists can make a detour to the Felser Warte – involving a steep ascent and descent through two of the numerous cellar lanes. Those who prefer it more leisurely follow the signage towards Thürnthal. There, the route passes directly by the baroque-classicist castle. At Thürnthal, the route crosses the distinctive terrain step twice, with short ascents and descents. The further way to Kirchberg via Engelmannsbrunn is characterized by the beautiful view over the Danube plain on one side and the view of the Wagram vineyards on the slopes on the other. At Kirchberg, in front of the regional wine shop, we have exactly covered half the distance towards Tulln. Besides the Weritas regional wine shop, one can also visit the Alchemist Museum in Kirchberg.
In Kirchberg, there is the option to ride towards Altenwörth and back to the Danube cycle path or continue through the Wagram region to Tulln and then return to the Danube cycle path. In the reverse direction as well, this section of the route from the Danube cycle path near Altenwörth to Kirchberg is signposted.
We leave Kirchberg heading east, passing the Alchemist Park and along the upper part of the Wagram ridge. To the right, we have a beautiful view over the Danube plain. After passing through Unterstockstall, we reach the cellar lane of Königsbrunn. Not far from Königsbrunn in Absberg is the next very long and beautiful cellar lane. Then follows an idyllic section along the Schmidamühlbach brook. Through Stetteldorf, we cycle in a loop past the foot of Stetteldorf Castle with its historic courtyard garden, which directly overlooks the Danube plain on the escarpment. Following the signage, we cross the plain on the way back to the Danube cycle path in Tulln. If we take a quick look back, we can still see the castle perched on the Wagram ridge for some time.
Near Neuaigen and Trübensee, the Danube floodplain begins again. Through the floodplain, there is a cycle path parallel to the street leading to the Danube bridge in Tulln and after crossing the river, the cycling route through the Wagram again flows directly into the Danube cycle path, which we left near Grafenwörth. Tulln offers many worthwhile excursion destinations, such as "GARTEN TULLN", the Roman Museum, or the Danube stage. In addition, Tulln is the birthplace of Egon Schiele and there is the Egon Schiele Birth House, an Egon Schiele Museum, and the Egon Schiele thematic trail to discover.
