This section of the Jakobsweg leads us up and down hills through the largely agricultural landscape of the Mostviertel. Over pastures, through cornfields, and along the beautiful Danube, we pilgrimage from the Maria Taferl pilgrimage basilica to Linz at Pöstlingberg, enjoying the tranquility of the Mostviertel cultural landscape for long stretches.

The Jakobsweg comprises a whole network of pilgrimage routes across Europe and ends in Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia, Spain, at the tomb of the Apostle James. In Austria, some routes also lead to the "real" Jakobsweg. The most important route runs from east to west, part of which consists of the four pilgrimage stages described here (Melk - Linz). The beginnings of the Jakobsweg can be traced back to the 11th century, and the path through Austria is said to have been walked year after year by believers from Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Austria since the 12th century. From the 1970s and 1980s, a real pilgrimage boom broke out, which still attracts many people today. Since 1987, the Jakobsweg has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
