  • Hiking in the Krems Valley ("Kremstal" in German)

Welcome to the land of the silent giants: The market town of Paudorf in the district of Krems-Land is home to the largest closed stand of sequoia trees in Europe. The quarry opened in 1896 - where around 500,000 tons of hard rock are extracted every year - and the extensive vineyards are also fascinating. Cultural and leisure activities for young and old round off the excursion experience in Paudorf all year round.

Paudorf: sequoia trees & arboretum

In 1880, the later abbot Adalbert Dungel planted some seeds of the Wellingtonia gigantea on the plateau of the Eichberg. The resulting sequoia trees are now among the largest contiguous stands in Europe. Today, the Göttweiger Forest Experience presents over 30 native tree and shrub species. In the arboretum - a tree garden next to the sequoias - visitors can also get to know 50 tree species from all over the world.

Excursion tips for Paudorf

The Hellerhof, which is well worth a visit, is the setting for the opera "Der Evangelimann" by the important Austrian composer Wilhelm Kienzl, to whom a museum is also dedicated here. The wine cellar lane in Höbenbach is one of the most beautiful in Lower Austria. In addition, a variety of hiking trails lead through the Dunkelsteinerwald region - with magnificent viewpoints such as Predigtstuhl and Waxenberg.

Popular hiking routes include the Furth-Paudorf long-distance hiking trail stage with a visit to the sequoia trees or the Krems Valley ("Kremstal" in German) Danube 04 route from Paudorf to Hollenburg. Numerous wine taverns throughout the "Vinum circa montem" wine-growing region invite you to take a leisurely break.
