Located in the center of the city of Krems an der Donau is the Bürgerspitalskirche dedicated to St. James the Younger and St. Philip.
After the destruction of the original building outside the town, permission was granted to build it in a more central location within the town walls. For this purpose, abandoned Jewish houses were demolished with the consent of Emperor Frederick III, whose famous motto A.E.I.O.U. with the year 1470 is inscribed on the lintel of the main portal.
The buttresses offset inwards on the street side are a special architectural feature. This type of construction was chosen so as not to interfere with the most important traffic junction of the time, the main road.
