The Carnuntum wine-growing area is the region of Lower Austria that stretches east of Vienna and south of the Danube. Viticulture is cultivated here on three hilly landscapes: In the Arbesthaler Hügelland, on the Leithagebirge and on the Hundsheimer Berge. Strong loess and sparse limestone soils as well as the continental-Pannonian microclimate with the cooling influence of the Danube offer ideal conditions for viticulture.

Around 25 members of the association produced "Rubin Carnuntum" for the first time in 1992. Today, there are more than 40 wineries that have a "Rubin Carnuntum" in their range. The prerequisite is the achievement of a minimum must gradation value of 18° Klosterneuburger Mostwaage or 12.5% alcohol and a positive verdict from the Rubin jury, which meets annually. For the production of "Rubin Carnuntum", only the Zweigelt variety typical of the region may be used, which has a particularly strong character thanks to the special microclimate between the Leitha Mountains and the Danube floodplains in Carnuntum. Rubin Carnuntum wines bear the Heidentor in their capsule.

The association of Rubin Carnuntum wineries has joined the process of site classification, which the traditional Austrian wineries have been working on for two decades. The aim of site classification is to highlight the significance and special features of individual origins and to provide consumers with orientation in the multitude of wine and origin designations. Nine vineyards in Carnuntum have now been classified as "Erste Lage".
