The enchanting Aggsbach Markt - the main town in the municipality of Aggsbach - is located on the left bank of the Danube in the upper Wachau. The area was demonstrably settled by mammoth hunters as early as the Ice Age and was first mentioned in a document in 830. In 1441, the village was elevated to a market town.

Aggsbach: The Venus of Willendorf & other sights

Willendorf is the site where the world-famous, over 29,500-year-old fertility statue "Venus of Willendorf" was found. The statue is one of the most important archaeological finds in Austria. The "Venusium" museum in Willendorf, the late Romanesque pillar basilica and a vicarage designed by Jakob Prandtauer are important sights in the municipality.

Historic parish of Aggsbach

The parish church in Aggsbach was first mentioned in a document in 1148. A three-aisled pillar basilica was built at the end of the 13th century. It later underwent Gothic additions and was baroqueized in the late 18th century. Until then, Aggsbach was also a well-known place of pilgrimage to the Virgin Mary.

Enjoy the Wachau: Good food & idyllic bathing

From traditional inns to cozy wine taverns: The whole of Aggsbach is a particularly good place to eat and drink. Visitors from all over the world will also find numerous marked hiking trails along the Wachau World Heritage Trail (tip: the Aggsbach Markt to Emmersdorf route) as well as cycle paths - such as the famous Danube cycle path.

Passionate anglers will be delighted by the fishing opportunities in one of the last free-flowing stretches of the Danube. And in summer, it's not just families with children who love the river pool with its extensive natural bathing beach and buffet - with a magnificent view of the Aggstein ruins.
