The ruins of Pottenburg Castle near Wolfsthal are an impressive relic of medieval architecture. Once built as an important border fortress against Hungary, it sits enthroned on a wooded hill in the Lower Carpathians, around 120 metres below the summit of the Königswarte.

The striking 26.5 metre high keep from the 13th century is visible from afar and bears witness to the former importance of the fortress. Surrounded by the remains of the curtain wall and other wall remains, the ruins invite you to take a journey of discovery into the past.

Pottenburg Castle is accessible all year round and can be reached via various hiking trails. A popular starting point is Wolfsthal, from where a leisurely path leads to the ruins. The hike can be extended, for example to the nearby Königswarte, which offers a magnificent view over the region.

A visit to the Pottenburg ruins not only offers an insight into history, but also the opportunity to experience the charming landscape of the Lower Austrian border region.
