The Vienna Gate is the largest medieval city gate in Europe. The lower part was built in the first half of the 13th century, the upper part in 1267/68 by Ottokar of Bohemia. The Romanesque structure is 20 m high and has an 11 m high roof construction.

Local history collection

In 15 showcases, old weapons and a rich collection of targets from the former shooting range in front of the gate and cannons from the Thirty Years' War are on display. Weapons and other finds from 1683, a tragic year for Hainburg, are also on display. In 1683, Hainburg was attacked by the Ottomans and almost all of the town's inhabitants were murdered.

Exhibits from the old Hainburg needle factory are a reminder of the beginning of industrialization in the 19th century.

The guild flag of the stove makers from 1749 in the middle of the room has been lovingly restored in recent years. Guild objects such as chests, Lebzelter models and reminders of the old ship's waste tradition are also on display.

Prehistory

Hainburg is located in an area that has been inhabited for 7,000 years. The two most important excavation areas are the Braunsberg and the Teichtal. Excavations were first carried out on the Braunsberg in 1931. Archaeological investigations have been underway since 1986 under the direction of Dr. O.H. Urban (Institute for Prehistory and Early History at the University of Vienna), and a reconstruction of a Celtic rampart including a watchtower has been erected on the Braunsberg.

From 1927 to 1939, the Natural History Museum Vienna and, since 1980, Univ.Doz. Dr. J.W. Neugebauer (Federal Office for the Protection of Monuments). The preliminary status of the archaeological research is presented in this exhibition. In addition to numerous photos and pottery finds, 3 stool graves are also on display.
