    Roadbook

    Bad Deutsch-Altenburg - Petronell - Haslau - Orth - Stopfenreuth - Bad Deutsch-Altenburg

The journey into the national park begins in the Kurpark in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. A visit to the Museum Carnuntinum, Austria's largest Roman museum and the treasure house of Carnuntum, is worthwhile here. On the way to Petronell-Carnuntum, you pass the Bad Deutsch-Altenburg amphitheater, the only still visible part of the former military town.

In Petronell-Carnuntum is the Roman city Carnuntum with the Roman district and the amphitheater of the civilian city. Here, the fascinating world of the Romans is brought back to life. A visit to the Roman city Carnuntum is recommended, where a part of a Roman city district has been rebuilt on its original site, unique worldwide. Shortly afterwards, you pass the imposing Heidentor, probably the best-known Roman monument in Austria and the symbol of the Carnuntum region.

The route continues through fields and past imposing wind turbines. In Haslau on the Danube, you take the hill path, which lives up to its name, down to the ferry crossing the Danube to Orth. From April to October, a daily ferry on demand operates between Haslau and Orth/Danube. You are now in the heart of the Donau-Auen National Park, one of the last large untouched floodplain areas in Europe.

In Orth, Orth Castle with the National Park Centre and castle island as well as museumORTH invite you to visit. You cycle further downstream on the dam crest straight through the national park with its unique fauna and flora. Midway between Orth and Stopfenreuth is Eckartsau Castle, the fate castle of the Habsburgs, in the middle of a romantic freely accessible castle park.

In Stopfenreuth, nature enthusiasts can make a detour to the Danube. On hot days, it is also wonderful to bathe in the Danube here. Across the majestic Danube bridge, you return to the other shore of the Danube and to the starting point Bad Deutsch-Altenburg.
