Along the stage from Krems to Mautern, numerous cultural highlights await to be discovered. The starting point of the hike in the middle of Krems old town is already a real eye-catcher. An ensemble that combines Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture gives the town a unique ambiance. The colorful Kunstmeile Krems and the Lower Austria State Gallery complete the artistic overall concept. Over the listed steel truss bridge, you finally reach Mautern. The town impresses with its exceptionally well-preserved buildings of the Roman fort Faviani and its ancient history. The Roman Museum also displays exciting finds from times long thought lost. Due to the short distance and the easy difficulty level, the first stage of the Kremstal-Danube long-distance hiking trail is particularly suitable for all hiking enthusiasts who love culture.
Mautern on the Danube – the gateway to the Wachau – offers a spectacular view of the well-preserved buildings of the Roman fort FAVIANIS. The Roman Museum Mautern in the Baroque granary in Mautern displays many finds that testify to the long presence of the Romans.
