Experience the vastness of the Tullnerfeld
The route along the beautiful Danube cycle path leads you from the city of Mautern on the Danube, already popular with the Romans, to Klosterneuburg. Along the way through the picturesque Danube valley, you will pass the towns of Traismauer, Zwentendorf on the Danube, Tulln on the Danube, and St. Andrä-Wördern until you reach your destination.
The fact that the ancient Romans played an important role in the history of Mautern is evident not only from some remains of the Roman fortress Favianis. The Roman Museum in the baroque Schüttkasten of the castle also tells of the importance of the place in antiquity, while pretty townhouses report on the flourishing of the city in the 15th and 16th centuries.
Now the Tullnerfeld with its many surprises lies before you. The region is rich in landscapes and habitats, delicacies and specialties, and art and culture. The Tullnerfeld cycle path invites you to an interesting day trip on your bike. If your schedule allows, visit Traismauer, the historic Roman and Nibelung city. Roman times are evidenced in the town center by the Roman gate, the Hunger Tower, and the former Roman fortress – today an elegant castle with a wine tavern. Enjoy a tasty sample of the Sitzenberger carp or relax at the summer festivals at Sitzenberg Castle. Typical places like Atzenbrugg, where the song prince Franz Schubert made music, or Rust with the Leopold Figl Museum, are just as much part of the Tullnerfeld as Langenrohr with the Josef Reither Museum.
Passing Zwentendorf with Austria's only nuclear power plant that was never put into operation, you reach Tulln. Not only the GARTEN TULLN with its 70 gardens (reopened from May 15, 2020), the 30-meter-high tree-top path, and the water park (boat rental!), but also the Hundertwasser ship »Rainy Day« and the Tullner Aubad are located almost directly on the cycle path.
After Tulln, you are accompanied by the hill chain of the Vienna Woods, which at the Danube bend Greifenstein finally reaches right to the shore. Here, a secluded old Danube arm invites you to swim. Now it is not far to the wine town of Klosterneuburg.
