Welterbesteig Wachau in Winter: From Hofarnsdorf to Rossatz
The stage from Hofarnsdorf to Rossatz links traditional wine-growing villages with historically significant routes and impressive natural landscapes. Starting at the Gründerzeit-era Hofarnsdorf Castle, the trail passes through Mitterarnsdorf and Bacharnsdorf, home to a Roman watchtower, before following a former Roman road into the Kupfertal valley and the wintery forests of the Dunkelsteinerwald.
Traces of the Ottoman wars, together with wide-ranging views from the Seekopf and the Hirschwand, characterise this section. The route then leads through the Steinige Ries nature reserve, with its largely untouched oak and hornbeam woodland, and continues through vineyards before descending into the idyllic wine-growing village of Rossatz.
Walking the Wachau World Heritage Trail reveals, step by step, why the Wachau has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage region. Along finely curated World Heritage Spots, the defining World Heritage Highlights become visible—the interplay of historic cultural landscape, centuries-old viticulture, exceptional natural habitats and the Danube as a shaping force.
Thanks to excellent rail connections, a relaxed and sustainable journey to the Wachau is easy. Within the region, a dense public transport network ensures that all stages can be conveniently reached by bus, train, ferry and boat, making it simple to combine different stages.
The Wachau World Heritage Trail is also awarded the Austrian Hiking Quality Seal. This certification represents high standards in route layout, waymarking, safety and infrastructure, confirming the trail as a reliable and high-quality walking experience at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage site.
