Through the imposing side valley of the Wachau called Spitzer Graben the panoramic way leads from Spitz to Mühldorf. Starting at the Wachau area and ending the stage at the southern part of the wood quarter of Lawer Austria. The steepest and highest stone terraces, old oak and beech woods, wine villages, romantic castle „Oberranna“ and unique impressions and fantastic views into the Spitzer Graben, towards the Danube and the Jauerling await you on this stage.
Wachau World Heritage Trail: from Spitz to Mühldorf (Spitzer Graben)
The stage from Spitz to Mühldorf leads from the traditional wine town of Spitz into a varied cultural landscape of vineyards, woodland and quiet valleys. Crossing the Tausendeimerberg and Setzberg, the route enters the impressive stone-terrace vineyard landscape of the Spitzer Graben, one of the region’s most distinctive wine-growing areas. Beautiful vineyard sites, light oak and beech woods, and three rest huts run by the Marivino association accompany this diverse section.
Via Muthstall and Niederranna, the trail passes the Romanesque Oberranna Castle, an important witness to medieval architecture. Following the Ranna stream, the route descends into the valley, passing the Calvary hill and gently downhill along the Ötzbach to Unterranna. The stage ends in Mühldorf, set within a peaceful valley landscape and offering a tranquil close to this nature-rich walk.
Walking the Wachau World Heritage Trail reveals, step by step, why the Wachau is a UNESCO World Heritage region. Finely curated World Heritage Spots make the defining World Heritage Highlights visible—the interplay of cultural landscape, traditional viticulture, exceptional natural habitats and the Danube as a shaping force.
For a carefree, all-round offer—including luggage transfer, tastings and transfers—one of the varied walking packages is recommended.
Thanks to excellent rail connections, a relaxed and sustainable journey to the Wachau is straightforward. Within the region, a dense public transport network makes all stages easy to reach by bus, train, ferry and boat, allowing stages to be combined with great flexibility.
The Wachau World Heritage Trail also holds the Austrian Hiking Quality Seal. This certification represents high standards in route design, waymarking, safety and infrastructure, confirming the trail as a reliable, high-quality walking experience at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage site.
