One place.a thousand stories

There is no other place in the entire German-speaking world where spiritual and secular life are so closely intertwined as in Stift Klosterneuburg.

This connection has a long tradition - Stift Klosterneuburg has been the seat of the Augustinian canons for 900 years and was at times the residence of the Babenbergs and Habsburgs. The tradition lives on: the monastery is also a place of living faith, a preservation site for unique cultural treasures and a producer by fine wines.

The interaction between the spiritual and the secular gives Stift Klosterneuburg its unmistakable charm. This is revealed in several attractive themed tours. Visitors will find the appropriate infrastructure - from the monastery's own underground car park to the culinary conclusion of a tour in the winery's vinotheque, Caféhaus Holler, Café Egon or Restaurant Leopold.

A visit to the monastery begins in the Sala terrena, the unfinished garden hall with the mighty atlases by Lorenzo Mattielli. Created in 2006, this visitor entrance has been preserved as a Baroque building site in the state in which construction was halted in 1740 - a concept that has been awarded the European Union Prize for the Protection of Monuments.

Stift Klosterneuburg can be explored in all its fascinating facets on several themed tours, either with a guide or individually. We look forward to your visit!

Gardens of the centuries

The secret gardens of Stift Klosterneuburg open up to visitors from the "Sala terrena" through the modern garden landscape of the pond garden, in which thousands of flowers and grasses form a biblical "lily of the field", and through the English-style convent garden. This ornamental garden was created in the 19th century on the former banks of the Danube for the canons' recreation and is home to one of the largest ginkgo trees in Austria, the neoclassical orangery by Joseph Kornhäusel and a fountain.

In the center of the old monastery complex is the "Kreuzgarten", which has been revitalized according to medieval models, including plant symbolism. Adapted to the architectural surroundings, the "Gardens of the Centuries" were gradually created and presented for the first time in 2012: Typical late Renaissance plants thrive in the Feuerbrunnenhof, while the Leopoldihof was revitalized in the Mannerist style. The Pfistererstiegenhof and the Wassertorhof, on the other hand, are home to gardens as they were in the Middle Ages.
