The Nibelungendenkmal was built in 1987 and shows sixteen mosaic panels of scenes from the Nibelungenlied. The Nibelungenlied also tells of a margrave Rüdiger von Bechelaren and his hospitality. In order to maintain the tradition of the Nibelungen in Pöchlarn, a Nibelungensymposium is held every two years. The Nibelungendenkmal was designed by Heinz Knapp and represents a contribution to the European idea of peace.
