Melk Abbey on the rock above the town of Melk is a destination for hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world every year. Below the world-famous Benedictine abbey, another cultural and historical jewel opens up: the UNESCO World Hertige site town of Melk.

The town of Melk opens up to visitors like a magnificent illustrated book. More than 1,000 years of history can be experienced in the alleyways and squares of the historic old town. The "most beautiful post office in Austria", the town towers, the Gothic parish church, the cottage quarter with the Villa Loos or the countless town houses are among the sights of the old town.Visitors can also experience and explore this rich historical heritage and the unique flair of the city up close on the themed trail "The Red Thread".

The town of Melk is also known far beyond its borders for its top-class cultural events. Virtuosos from all over the world come to Melk Abbey for the International Baroque Days at Whitsun. Sophisticated theater and humorous musical revues are offered every year by the Melk Summer Festival in the Wachauarena. Cabaret and cabaret can be found in the Kulturwerkstatt Tischlerei Melk right in the town center.
