  • Petronell-Carnuntum Castle

Construction of the square castle in Petronell-Carnuntum began as early as the 11th century. The original moated castle was transformed into a baroque complex in the 17th century, the design of which is partly based on ancient building materials from the nearby Roman ruins.

The square inner courtyard with water basin and the magnificent Knights' Hall with historical frescoes are striking.

The castle is privately owned and is not open to the public. However, it is occasionally used for cultural events, such as concerts by the Haydn Region of Lower Austria.

A short stop is worthwhile - if only for the impressive façade and the historical significance of the building.
