The monastery was founded in 1380 by Heidenreich von Maissau. In 1782, the monastery was abolished by Emperor Joseph II and converted into a castle. Parts of the monastery were incorporated into the parsonage, while the Carthusian cells and the large cloister were razed. The Carthusian church was given a church tower attached to the chancel and became a parish church.
The Carthusian Museum tells of the work of the Carthusians and shows the history of the Charterhouse. The Way of the Cross on the Calvary begins opposite the end of the Carthusian monastery complex towards the valley.
Guided tours of the museum and church by prior arrangement with Ms. Christine Nussbaumer by telephone on +43 664 9370444 or at the Aggsbach municipal office +43 2753 8269
Nearby (Aggsbach village no. 3) are the hammer mill and the Steinstadel mineral center.
In June 2016, the new meditation garden was opened in the area of the former cell wing of the Charterhouse complex. The large cloister and the hermit's huts were systematically demolished to a certain level after the abolition of the monastery in 1782. This important part of a charterhouse is now being made visible again in the form of "green architecture". The concrete foundations for the trellises have been erected precisely over the remains of the walls found during the excavation campaigns of the Federal Monuments Office. This means that visitors can now walk through the large cloister, which is covered with blue vines, to the seven cells. The green walls of the cells are overgrown with various climbing plants. In each of the seven cells, a text panel invites visitors to reflect. Thoughts from the spirituality of the Carthusians are juxtaposed with those of modern philosophers.
A tour along the perimeter wall offers a "view from above" of the garden.
