    Roadbook

Entry Prellenkirchen Kellergasse - Kellerviertel Edelstal

The start and end point of the hike is one of the most beautiful Kellergassen of the region, located between Edelstal and Prellenkirchen. The lovingly maintained cellars house, besides wine taverns, also a small museum about viticulture in the region.

At the beginning, you walk through the shady alley between the romantic cellar houses heading east, towards the edge of the first vineyards. Shortly after, you reach the main road, from which the path turns left and leads up the gentle vineyards. The narrow paved road runs exactly along the border between Lower Austria in the southwest and Burgenland in the northeast.

With every meter, the view widens over the flat landscape of Burgenland and the impressive wind farms in front of Lake Neusiedl.

At the highest point of the country road, you can take a short rest at a shady spot and enjoy the view of Edelstal.

To reach the Edelstal Kellerviertel, the path follows the forest edge downwards, along the border of the former “Tiergarten.” It was built in the mid-18th century by the Esterházy family as a fallow deer enclosure. Some wall remnants can still be found in places.

Passing a small wayside shrine, you reach the Kellerviertel after a few minutes. The wildly scattered cellars are a special feature, especially compared to the usually linear arranged Kellergassen. They form a labyrinth with many photo spots to discover.

    Kellerviertel - Spitzerberg

Passing the small chapel, the country road leads along the edge of the village and between the fields up the sunny hillside in the northwest. You are always accompanied by the view of the village Edelstal and the Tiergarten forest at the foot of Spitzerberg.

The country road finally ends at the forest edge and transitions to a forest path, which immediately turns left. At another intersection located at a meadow corner, you keep the direction. Through the dense deciduous forest, the path gently ascends, while the almost straight driveway limits the northwestern side of the Tiergarten. On the left side, you can repeatedly glimpse the remains of the princely garden.

    View Spitzerberg

At the ridge of Spitzerberg, the forest finally opens and gives way to the dry grassland of the nature reserve. The clear view south (southwest) offers a panorama over the community of Prellenkirchen and the wind turbines, which count among the first installations in Lower Austria. In good weather, not only Lake Neusiedl and the Leitha Mountains are close at hand, but also Schneeberg and the foothills of the Alps can be seen.

    Spitzerberg - Kellergasse

Along the dry grassland, the path continues in a curve southwards without losing sight of the panorama. After a short steeper section downhill, you reach a paved country road that runs level through the sunny vineyards. At the next intersection, you can take a break between the vines with a view of Prellenkirchen.

The last section of the country road runs through an impressively deep hollow way, which is roofed by mighty deciduous trees and leads directly back to the starting point of the hike in the Prellenkirchen Kellergasse.
