The tour starts at the castel in Leiben and leads slightly uphill through Weinzierl, down via Kaumberg and through the village Ebersdorf. Along the wood‘s edge the last part of the way leads down to Klein Pöchlarn on an asphalt road. Now the way leads downstream along the Danube, afterwards via the Danube bridge and then upstream to the „Nibelungendenkmal“ (Nibelung monument) in Pöchlarn.

The Nibelungengau long distance trail is split up into 8 stages and can be passed through in both directions. Signs along the way will help you to find the right direction.

Turn-by-turn directions

The tour starts at the panorama panel at the castle in Leiben. The approximately 800-year-old castle thrones on a massive and steep rock and marks the transition from the southern part of the rough woodquarter into picturesque Danube valley in a very impressive way. The way leads slightly uphill through Weinzierl, via Kaumberg (hill) and through the village Ebersdorf. Here you get a great view of Melk abbey and – depending on the weather – you can also enjoy a view of the Ötscher (famous mountain in Austria). Along the wood’s edge with rare plant species the last part of the way leads down to Klein Pöchlarn on an asphalt road. From there the way first leads downstream along the Danube. Afterwards you cross the bridge and now you walk upstream until the panorama panel in Pöchlarn at the Nibelung monument. One of the most famous Austrian artists of the 20th century Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980), who was born in the Lawer Austrian city of Pöchlarn was painter, poet and graphic artist. Kokoschka museum which is located in his house of birth displays about 100 artworks of this great expressionist.

Public transport

With the Austrian Federal Railway (ÖBB) you travel to trainstation Melk (timetable). From the trainstation you can take a bus (Postbus) to Leiben (timetable).

 

Directions

Highway A1 until exit Pöchlarn, then take the first exit at the roundabout, and after about 1 kilometer turn left following direction „Donaubrücke“ (Danube bridge). Cross the bridge, stay right an follow road B3 to Ebersdorf. In the village of Ebersdorf you turn left to drive up to Leiben.

Approaching from Grein or Krems, country road B3 leads you directly to Ebersdorf and in the village you turn left approaching from Grein or you turn right approaching from Krems to drive up to Leiben.

Parking

At the castle in Leiben or in Pöchlarn in the city center or at the parking lot in front of the Nibelung monument.
