In the Middle Ages, the monasteries in particular shaped economic and cultural life in the Wachau. At the end of the

15th century, almost three quarters of the Wachau vineyards were owned by the church. In order to press the wine, the monasteries built stately

harvesting yards. At that time, more than 50 monasteries built harvesting yards. Many of these farms are still

wineries to this day.
