Under the motto "Small places - big stories", selected local walks in Römerland Carnuntum and Marchfeld lead along sometimes unknown paths to historic buildings and old walls, through beautiful nature and hidden alleyways.
The remains of Carnuntum and the historical legacy of the Romans are inextricably linked to this small market town. - Route description The start is at the visitor center of the Roman city of Carnuntum (free parking if you arrive by car; hourly train connection from/to Vienna). Follow the path that leads left from the entrance to the Roman city of Carnuntum towards the manor and castle. Shortly after the "Black Gate" (stone portal at the street entrance), the first audio story "Welcome to the Roman city Petronell-Carnuntum" awaits with interesting details about the Roman city. At the fork, take the path to the right towards Petronell Castle. The audio story "Petronell Castle" also surprises with many interesting background details. Via Lange Gasse, you reach Kirchengasse, where you turn left and which leads to the parish church St. Petronilla. There, the audio story "How Petronell got its name" is told. A narrow path along the cemetery wall* leads towards the elementary school. (*Note: barrier-free alternative via the cemetery is possible!) There turn right; the narrow path leads – directly past the kindergarten and elementary school – further to the main road. Turn right onto this main road. Then keep an eye out for the "toll men" on the main road, as the exciting "story of the toll men" tells more about these two guards. Now follow the main road and shortly before the starting point, you will see on the left on a hill the unique round chapel or St. John’s Church. It is one of the most important Romanesque round churches in Austria. The last audio story is about "The exciting story of the round chapel." Now it is not far back to the starting point of the Petronell-Carnuntum local walk.
