The Maria Ellend - Schwecht stage has a particularly beautiful section through the Donau-Auen National Park.
From Maria Ellend, the path leads past the church towards Fischamend. One of the most beautiful sections of the Carnuntum Way of St. James runs through the idyllic Danube floodplains. After passing under the highway and past the pumping station, you reach Fischamend. The route continues along the Danube on the Treppelweg to Mannswörth, where it either follows the Way of St. James in Vienna or continues to the Church of St. James in Schwechat.
At Maria Ellend, walk past the church and follow the road. After about 200 meters, a signpost points slightly to the right toward Fischamend. After a while, you’ll reach the Danube floodplains, a particularly beautiful section of the Carnuntum Way of St. James, where you continue straight ahead. Once you pass under the highway bridge and walk past a large pumping station, you’ll soon arrive at the church in Fischamend. Follow the signs to the left, and you’ll soon see the church. If you’d like, you can explore the town a bit more closely. The “Ortsspaziergänge Carnuntum-Marchfeld” app offers many interesting audio stops and photos, such as those of the Fischaturm, which houses the local history museum. Passing the church, the route takes you through the neighborhood back toward the Danube. From there, follow the Treppelweg all the way to Mannswörth. In Mannswörth, you can either turn left immediately to follow the Vienna Way of St. James or continue straight ahead to visit the beautiful St. James Church in Schwechat.
