This stage leads from Petronell-Carnuntum with its impressive Roman town of Carnuntum to Maria Ellend, where you can visit the pilgrimage church and the Lourdes grotto.
From the Roman town of Carnuntum, the trail leads across the parking lot to the Heidentor, the landmark of the region and the Carnuntum Way of St. James. The route continues along the signposts to Wildungsmauer with its Romanesque church or alternatively towards Regelsbrunn. Via Haslau you reach Maria Ellend, where the pilgrimage church "Our Lady of the Rosary" and the famous Lourdes Grotto invite you to pause for a moment.
At the Roman site of Carnuntum, cross the street and walk across the large parking lot toward the Heidentor. You’ll pass the Heidentor, the landmark of both the region and the Way of St. James in Carnuntum. Continue following the signs for the Way of St. James toward Wildungsmauer. Once you arrive in Wildungsmauer, you have the option to visit the 16th-century Romanesque church or follow the sign to the Jahner Buschenschank (typical tavern) to the left toward Regelsbrunn. In Regelsbrunn, walk past St. James’ Church and take the slight right turn toward Haslau. At the small chapel, turn left and continue on to Maria Ellend. Once you arrive in Maria Ellend, you can visit not only the pilgrimage church “Our Lady of the Rosary” but also the famous Lourdes Grotto.
